Parenting: Navigating Everything
We all want the best for our kids but which parenting information do we choose? With over 75,000 parenting books produced in the past 21 years and the many voices, articles and online resources available, the task of figuring out where to turn for parenting advice is overwhelming. Some foundational parenting questions all parents must consider:
  1. What are Parenting Styles and which ones should I be using in my parenting?
  2. How can I gain better communication skills and use them with my children?
  3. What does spending time with my kids look like?
  4. How do I effectively discipline my children?
Various aspects of home life also need addressing, with each section being a sizeable discussion on their own. In this talk I will look at where parents can begin these discussions, (on-ramps) and give them practical tools so they can effectively talk with their kids about all of the following areas:
  1. Family Discipleship (how to raise our kids in our Christian faith)
  2. Health (mental, emotional, physical)
  3. Sexuality (pornography, dating, marriage)
  4. Media (TV, movies, music, social media)
  5. Drug / Alcohol use & abuse
  6. Education
  7. Finances

Christian Meditation with Children
Yes, children can meditate! And what’s more, childrenliketo meditate.
A child has a natural capacity to experience God, unmediated by language or concepts. Some of the qualities we find in children are: openness, innocence, trust, wonder, the acceptance of others, the ability to be in the present moment.
Meditation is a way of prayer which involves silence, stillness, and simplicity which taps into this contemplative nature of children. It is the movement from the head to the heart in which we experience the love of God and all that that entails for ourselves and the world.
And, in this new world of disruption, anxiety, stress, and uncertainty, how important and life-giving for a child to know the “peace that passes beyond understanding” – this is the peace that Jesus gives. And in meditation the child experiences this peace through silence. “Be still and know that I am God” becomes an anchor amid the storms of life, knowing that God is ultimately in control, and that God’s love is the underlying truth of their being.
When asked what meditation means to them, here are a few responses from children aged 5 to 12:
“Listening to Jesus” “Caring for others, being like Jesus; “We close our eyes and be still” “Giving love to God” “I really felt God was in my heart” “I think meditation brings out the real me, and I don’t have to pretend to be somebody else.”
In this workshop we will first learn how to meditate ourselves, and then look at why and how to teach children this way of the “prayer of the heart.”
Meditation
deepens the child’s personal relationship with God in Christ
leads to increased self-knowledge and self-acceptance
increases the desire to build community
reduces stress and increases children’s sense of well-being and harmony.
And, as prayer, meditation leads to the fruits of the Spirit, love, joy, peace patience, kindness, gentleness, self-control (Gal. 5:22-23)

But I'm not Racist...
We see the protests around us and in the news, we hear about the racism in the education system and maybe we even recognize our churches are not free of racism, but what about our Sunday school and children’s ministry? Could there be a hidden racial curriculum in our Sunday school material? Are we aware of the ways we ‘normalize whiteness’ as a frame for children’s spirituality? It’s time to have some tough conversations and discover some simple, yet important ways to shift our ministry with children and families to truly embody the diversity and dignity of all of God’s people. Practical ideas, and conversation starters beginning with preschool kids and resources for families will be shared.

Scripture As Script
A 25 year award-winning veteran of professional theatre leads you in hands-on experience of dramatizing any bible passage through a simple progression of answering theatrical questions.   You don't need to be an actor, you just need to find answers to questions, together.

Characters, Crisis, Climax  and Outcome unite in story, as well as each person's own immersion in the narrative.   The Bible study becomes a drama, and the drama becomes a Bible study.   The TCMC workshop will focus on children's level process, but the approach can work for any age group.    Dennis Hassell Productions is happy to lead an introductory workshop at your church for any (or all) ages.

You will also learn how to imaginatively and simply design visual and aural elements that theatricalize the simplest story telling.  You will quickly see how children would respond profoundly to a play-full approach to any scripture story or passage.

One other thing: it's fun.

Leading from the Bottom
Too often, children’s leaders and workers can feel that what they are doing just doesn’t seem to be appreciated or recognized.  After a while, children’s ministry leaders burn out, give up, and walk out.  Could having a better relationship with the senior pastor help?  Would an understanding of what the senior pastor is truly thinking make a difference?  This workshop is designed to help you understand your senior pastor/leader and to develop ways to build a closer relationship with those that you serve under, as well as how you can have a greater influence in the lives of those above you.  Keys like honour, communication and open dialogue, and a servant’s heart are just some of the ways to help develop a relationship where you can ‘lead from the bottom’.

Media. Faith. Culture
When we interact with our culture, we take action and, when we think about what we are absorbing, we connect it to our self and our lives. As Christians, we need to actively be involved with our culture without blindly accepting it as true. Pascal said it wonderfully, “The greatest enemy of the spiritual life was inattention, complacency.”
No more thoughtless watching.
No more thoughtless listening.
No more thoughtless online activity.
No more thoughtless anything…
Christianity is a strategic, intentional daily pursuit.
